Air-conditioning in buildings can create an atmospheric condition causing facial lips to be dry. Lack of moisture in the air causes the skin to become cracked or flaky. Air-conditioning is designed to cool air in buildings when outdoor temperatures are high. The process of cooling the air reduces humidity. Humidity is moisture in the air. Sometimes air-conditioning reduces the moisture so much that individuals feel thirsty and dehydrated. Individuals spending most of their time in air-conditioned buildings may develop chapped lips.
What are Chapped Lips?
Most individuals have experienced cracked or dry lips. The skin on facial lips may peel or develop small cracks. The cracks may be deep enough to cause bleeding. Facial lips can become inflamed while appearing swollen and red. Individuals may experience pain from a burning sensation of dry facial lips. Severe chapped lips can lead to chronic infections of the skin. Occasionally, other regions of the face can also develop inflammation from dry facial lips.
A common complication of chapped lips is angular cheilitis. This condition can be caused by bacteria or fungus entering the fissures of dry facial lips. It primarily affects the corners of the mouth. The skin located around the corners of the mouth will become inflamed. Dry red patches of skin will develop. This painful condition often causes a chronic itchiness. The condition can spread to the chin, cheeks and nose. Individuals may constantly lick their facial lips to relieve the itchiness and pain. Licking the lips causes more inflammation because it removes the natural oil.
Symptoms of Chapped Lips
The lips of the face are usually coated with natural oil. The natural oil is produced by oil glands. This oils purpose is to protect facial lips from becoming dry. Occasionally, the facial lips do not produce enough oil to prevent dryness. In addition, individuals may lick their lips too much causing the protective oil layer to be removed. The digestive enzymes in saliva can cause lips to become drier. The use of cosmetics, soaps or other products can also reduce the amount of oil produced by the glands. Lip balms can coat the skin surface to assist in preventing moisture loss.
Caring for Facial Lips
Taking proper care of skin is also important during the hot summer. Air-conditioning can remove moisture from an office or home. Keeping your body properly hydrated is imperative. Drink adequate amounts of water each day. Consume a healthy diet of fruits, vegetables, grains, dairy products and protein. It is possible to add moisture to the air of buildings by using a humidifier. A humidifier is a machine that releases moisture droplets into the air. This helps to prevent chapped facial lips.
